Shining a light on Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS)
Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICCs) are genetic heart disorders that affect the heart’s rhythm or structure, often without any outward signs. While ICCs can be safely managed with early diagnosis and specialist care, sudden arrhythmic death syndrome can be a tragic outcome when these conditions go undetected.
SADS vs ICCs
It’s important to understand the connection between Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICCs) and Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS).
Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICCs) are genetic heart disorders that can be identified through screening and testing, even in otherwise healthy children and family members. They affect the heart’s rhythm or structure, often silently, and can be managed with the right care.
Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) occurs when an ICC goes undiagnosed accounting for many unexplained SADS cases. In these cases, the heart can suddenly and unexpectedly stop due to a dangerous rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation, often without warning.
Put simply, ICCs are the underlying conditions. SADS is a tragedy that can happen if it is not detected. This is why early recognition, family screening, and specialist care are so vital.
Preventing Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome
At Poppy’s Light Foundation, our mission is to shine a light on ICCs so that families can act before a life is lost, preventing SADS whenever possible.
Key message for families:
- A diagnosis doesn’t mean danger; it means knowledge, prevention, and protection.
- Every child and family with a history of unexplained fainting, seizures, or sudden death should be offered screening.
- Awareness saves lives, and early detection allows children to live full, safe, and active lives. Rather than becoming someone who dies suddenly without warning.
